Volunteers

Columbia Second Chance would not exist if it were not for the wonderful volunteers that take care of our pets. You will find them at any given time working at the ranch, doing dog washes, fostering animals, running adaption events, and taking care of all of the needs of our furry friends.

If you love animals and have the time and energy to give, please consider donating a few hours a week or month to Columbia Second Chance.

Below is a list of CSC volunteer opportunities. Additional opportunities are posted on the Home page under Events. If you're interested in any of these volunteer options, please contact CSC at columbiasecondchance@hotmail.com or phone 573-445-5598.

Volunteer Opportunities

Work in Our Adoption Center
Our adoption center is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We are always looking for friendly folks who can greet visitors and care for animals who are there to be seen. Shifts are usually 2-3 hours long and can be weekly, every two weeks or monthly. It's a great way to get to know other volunteers and our adoptable animals.
Pet Photo Events
Help our photographers take pictures of pets for the holidays; Valentine's Day, Easter, Halloween, Christmas. These events also serves as a mini-adoption events and are a lot of fun.
Animal Care
Would you like to make a lot of new furry friends? Come hang out with the dogs at the Ranch (30 minutes from Columbia) or the cats at the Catty Shack (15 minutes from Columbia). Animals at both places require daily love and care, feeding & scooping.
Dog Washes
Dog washes are held annually during the summer, and are a major fundraiser for CSC. These events also double as adoption events. Many volunteers are needed for a successful dog wash.
Follow Up Adoption Phone calls
We'd like to follow up with our adopters a couple times the first year to see that everything is working out. If you can help make these phone calls please let us know.
Work with Dogs!
Classes are starting in April for volunteers who are interested in helping our dogs become more adoptable by working with them on basic obedience. Meet once a week with our dog trainer to learn and practice positive reinforcement clicker training. This is a great opportunity to become skilled with training dogs and help CSC at the same time.
Use Videos, Web, and other E-Communication
We need some creative folks to help our animals get more exposure on the web! We will meet to talk about how to make that happen through posting videos, facebook, zootoo, etc. Volunteers can work on this flexibly as their schedule permits.
New Volunteer Training
Learn about the history of CSC and how we are part of the no-kill movement that is sweeping our country. Hear more about how you can participate.
Work With Cats
We need volunteers who can either go regularly (one day a week for about two hours) or occasionally (flexibly as your schedule permits) to visit cats in our boarding facility about a 15 minute drive from Columbia. Weekly visitors are paired with another volunteer to feed and care for the cats. Occasional visitors help to brush, play with and give cats special attention.
Pet Foster Parent
Foster homes allow us to save more animals. We are looking for foster homes for dogs, cats, kittens and puppies. We work with you to make sure you take a foster who fits in your home situation and we provide the food and vet care. You provide the love!
Take Animals to New Homes
We get requests several times a month to help transport dogs or cats who are traveling long distances to foster or permanent homes. People all across the country join together to drive a portion of the trip, knowing that they are helping animals get to where they will be loved and cared for. If you are interested in hearing when these transports are coming through Columbia, let us know and we'll add you to the list! The request is often for someone to drive part of the way to Kansas City or St. Louis. You decide on a case-by-case basis when you are available. (Folks who do this have AMAZING stories to tell)
